Sarsen stones on a bright sunny day with caption 'Stonehenge Rocks!' in a rocky font.

Stonehenge is the most famous and enigmatic historical site in the country. Developed in stages over a 5,000 year period, the giant standing stones weigh up to 50 tonnes and dominate the landscape of Salisbury Plain. Was it a ceremonial temple… or built by aliens? You decide.

Sarsen stones beneath a dramatic grey sky.

Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument in Wiltshire forming part of a wider Neolithic and Bronze Age landscape. The surrounding earth bank and ditch is believed to have been built around 3100BC and the site developed over the next two thousand years. A ring of large sarsen stones was added around a smaller ring of bluestones. The central area is occupied by huge free-standing trilithons. The whole monument is aligned to the summer solstice.

English Heritage

Stonehenge is a World Heritage Site managed by English Heritage a charity that looks after over 400 sites around the country. As well as prehistoric sites such as Stonehenge, English Heritage manage sites as diverse as Roman forts to medieval castles. They even manage a Cold War bunker! English Heritage states there sites attract over 10 million visitors every year.

Magic, Druids & Aliens

There have been many diverse theories as to the reason Stonehenge was built - some more outlandish than others. One thing for certain is that its true use had been forgotten by the time of the Romans. There have been a number of articles recently describing a belief that the bluestones have magical healing properties, turning Stonehenge into an ancient kind of Lourdes. Many of the bluestones are missing or show signs of damage, thought to be caused peoples over the millennia chipping pieces off for use as healing talisman.

Stonehenge has been synonymous with druidry for many years. Today it is a spiritual movement that honours our relationship with nature and harks back to the ancient druids who were high-ranking Celtic priests and healers. In Irish folklore druids were thought to have magical powers such as seeing into the future who's role was to serve lords and kings. Each year, to mark the summer solstice, druids flock to Stonehenge for worship and prayer. For the druids the solstice represents the time of 'death and rebirth', when the sun abandons the earth and the darkest day occurs.

The technolgy and sheer effort required to the move the stones leaves many to think that only aliens could have undertaken such a project. These theories were sparked off by the 1968 book Chariots of the Gods? Unsolved Mysteries of the Past written by Erich von Däniken who speculated that technologies were delivered to ancient humans by alien visitors.
