As the capital of England, London contains some of the largest and best known religious buildings in the country. Westminster Abbey and St Paul’s Cathedral are Anglican churches, which are both used for State occasions and Royal weddings. Westminster Abbey is an historic building of great importance used for the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth and important weddings such as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, better known as Prince William and Kate. It also contains many major royal tombs and tombs of people important in the public life of England. St Paul’s Cathedral hosted the wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana and is used for many important state occasions.
Westminster Cathedral is an important Catholic Church. The church has a diverse congregation, Catholics from all over the world come to this large church for mass.
Given the multi cultural nature of London many other religions have their Mosques, Synagogs and Temples within the Capital. The London Central Mosque is a well known place of worship located on the edge of Regent’s Park. In addition to many local Synagogues the Jewish community also have a Jewish Museum in Camden. The BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, located in Neasden, was built using traditional materials and techniques and is believed to be Britain’s first authentic Hindu temple. The Baitul Futuh Mosque in Morden, South London, is the largest purpose-built mosque in Western Europe.
